Originally from Panama and Cuba, Fragrant Panama rose is an evergreen shrub,
up to 2 m tall. Leaves are opposite, ovate,
elliptic, or elliptic-oblong, 2-5 x 1-3.5 cm. Flowers are borne at branch-ends,
in several to many flowered cymes, 2-3 x 3-4.5 cm, carried on
flower-cluster-stalk 0.7-1.5 cm. Bracts are narrowly triangular to ovate
or elliptic, 2-15 mm, pointed; flower-stalks 1.5-5 mm. Sepal-cup with
ovary portion spherical, 1.5-2 mm, densely bristly to pilosulous;
sepals 5, narrowly triangular to linear,
4-5 mm. Flower are bright orange-red
with yellow throat, pinwheel shaped, bristly outside; tube
1.2-2 cm; petals nearly round, about 3.5 x 4 mm, crisped, blunt to
rounded. Capsules are spherical to depressed spherical, 3-4 mm in diameter,
densely hirtellous or villosulous.
